How To Cook Steak

Knowing how to cook steak isn’t always easy. If the meat is cooked too quickly, it tends to dry out or become leathery. Start by using a heavy frying pan or skillet. Preheat the pan over high heat until hot. Your steaks will cook tough if you allow the pan to get too hot. Cooking steak requires good judgment when it comes to the timing.

Bring steaks to room temperature before brushing with olive or canola oil. If the steaks sizzle when you first place them in the frying pan, then you know the pan is hot enough. How long to cook a steak for doneness depends on how you like your meat. Cook the steak for about 4 minutes on one side before reducing the heat and cooking for another 3 minutes. Turn the steak over using a pair of tongs.

Be careful not to pierce the meat so that no juices escape. Cook the steak for another 6 minutes if you prefer your meat medium done. Cooking times will vary if you want the meat rare or like it well done. Rare meat should be supple when you press it with the tip of your finger. Remove steaks from the pan when done and allow them to rest for 10 minutes before serving. This makes for meat that is moist, tender, and flavorful.
